BARCELONA: Exclusive “Live Like A Local” Experience 2-night Pre-Cruise

Day 1:

Upon arrival in Barcelona your driver will be waiting for you as you pass through customs and immigration with a sign noting your name.  Relax as you are privately transferred to the Hotel Majestic where your Deluxe Urban City View Double Room awaits.  Steeped in a tradition of excellence, the hotel is located in the heart of the city, in the middle of Paseo de Gracia, where guests are able to enjoy the best of what Barcelona has to offer at their doorstep.  Founded by the Romans, Barcelona is a beautiful Mediterranean city and offers an impressive artistic and cultural heritage.  As the city is a major economic center, and one of Europe’s principal Mediterranean ports, it is delightful to walk Barcelona’s vibrant streets and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and agreeable climate.

After time to refresh at the hotel, meet your local guide in the hotel lobby and set off on a city tour designed to provide you with a sense of the ‘real’ Barcelona.  Stroll through local markets stopping along the way to chat with local artisans and shopkeepers.

This evening, engage in a centuries old Spanish tradition when you join a local resident for tapas.  Sharing tapas allows for the unique opportunity to become acquainted with your host in a friendly atmosphere as well as sample a variety of different dishes.  Steer the conversation to learn more about topics that interest you whether it be Spaniards view of the world, family life, sports or economic while tantalizing your taste buds with an array of regional specialties.

Return to the hotel by private vehicle.

Day 2:

Today indulge in the best of the Spanish pantry: A Personalized, Guided Tasting of Regional Specialties with author, photographer, peripatetic adventurer and cook Mr. Jeff Koehler.  Meet Jeff in the lobby of the hotel to set off for a visit to an authentic, family-run 1920’s delicatessen in Barcelona’s Eixample neighborhood.  Enjoy the authentic Spanish atmosphere where hams are hanging, bottles of wine, select preserves and colorful tins of seafood are displayed.  Seated around a marble table, sample a range of delicacies from the country’s most legendary producers including the famous dry-cured jamón ibérico de bellota and other cured pork products such as chorizo, llangonisa, and Mallorcan sobrasada. Taste a variety of different types of cheeses ranging from fresh to old, cow, goat and sheep. Try a variety of olives, tinned seafood, even preserved white asparagus so good that King Juan Carlos famously blurted out when tasting, “Cojonudos!” (a slightly vulgar way of saying “great” – especially from royalty – but an genuine sentiment for such a sublime flavor).

Go beyond sampling a selection of the top Spanish olive oils with a deep understanding and appreciation of how they are produced and what makes each type unique. Carry home with you the knowledge of how to select and best use olive for yourself. Gain insight on Spanish food products as well as an insider’s view of their role in the culture. In Spain, food and culture are so closely linked that to talk about one is to talk about the other.  So taste, learn and enjoy – for these foods are the essence of Spanish gastronomy.

After the tasting, return to your hotel where the remainder of your day is at your leisure.

Day 1:

Upon arrival in Madrid your driver will be waiting for you as you pass through customs and immigration with a sign noting your name.  Relax as you are privately transferred to the Hotel NH Palacio de Tepa where your Superior Double Room awaits.   During your stay in one of the world’s greatest cultural centers, enjoy your accommodations in a perfect location in the heart of Madrid’s Las Letras district.  The hotel blends updated and modern conveniences with the rich tradition of Spanish architecture.  In the heart of Spain, “where the sun never sets” Madrid is known for its contemporary cuisine, thrilling nightlife, and most agreeable climate.

After time to relax at the hotel and unwind from your international flight, this evening meet your local guide in the hotel lobby to engage in a centuries old Spanish tradition when you join a local resident for tapas.

Day 2:

This morning meet your local guide in the lobby of your hotel to embark on a magical journey into the hearts and minds of Madrileños (local) while creating long lasting memories by connecting with locals and learning of their way of life.

Meander through the trendy areas of the city and enter a fashion designer’s atelier.  Learn about Spanish gastronomy as you sample regional specialties at local delicatessen and sip wine at outdoor cafés.   Engage in conversation with your guide to gain a ‘real’ sense for life in Madrid, ask questions and discuss topics of greatest interest to you.

You can’t visit Madrid and not have a Chocolate con Churros!  Spain’s hot chocolate is made with dark chocolate and is thick, rich and delicious.  Churros, the Spanish cousin of the doughnut, are best enjoyed at a small sidewalk café on La Gran Via while you relax and enjoy the people watching as Madrileños pass by.  Chocolate is a very serious subject to the Spanish and  chocolate and churros is a pair that must be eaten together, one without the other leaves you feeling less than satisfied.
